In the last few days, I did not have (and still do not have) a reliable access to Internet. So I - despite your emails - did not blog about the British Sailors. I do not know if they were in Iran's territory or not. My TV and Radio are controlled fully by the government and say "They were in Iran's waters" all the time. CNN and BBC says "They were not" and both of them show "Proofs" !
I am not going to judge about it as I do not have the proper info and knowledge on Maritime Laws(?) or international laws. No doubt they are complicated :)
But I want and I have to tell my opinion on this issue. I think all of this problem was degrading for me as an Iranian. Many Iranians were concerned about "300" movie and says "It was defacing Iranian people". I think it did not. It was a movie and it did not claimed to be accurate. I think this Ahmadinejad is defacing us. In his silly gestures. When he orders some detainees to CONFESS on the TV. It is a routine. When they arrest you in Iran you have to confess on the TV and say "I hate what I did" and "Yes! I was wrong" and ... He did the same thing with the soldiers. I think there is no need for this.
My TV also lied a lot. My controlled media did it too. They told me "All the Britons confessed and thanked Iran for its hospitality" and "England sent us a letter and apologized for entering our territories". I did not check this news yet but it is unlikely to be true.
Ah.. and fuck us because of our hospitality! We arrest people. Do not allow them access phone lines or lawyers. Make them be a part of a show on TV and make them wear those silly suits and scarves. Then we announce "They apologized" and "we forgave them" and give them some gifts and CheloKabab and then release them. Is this Hospitality? Not In my opinion. I think this treatment is defacing.
I am sure in the next months whoever hears the name of "Iran" is not going to say:
- Iran? yes! I know them from the "300" movie. That ugly faced, poorly organized army.
but they probably will say:
- Oh ! I remember them. The issue of Britons! The silly nation who thinks being polite is a good meal and some souvenirs.
I do not like it. And I am sure there are a lot of Iranians who think like me but there are also a lot of them who heard the story like this: "The Britons were in our territory. We captured them. The world accepted that we were right. England apologized to us. We were hospitable and forgave them and even gave them some good meals and souvenirs." and they are proud of it.
Moral: I have to work more and more for the freedom of expression in this country.

I would like to know if yours is the standard sentiment in Iran. I agree with you, it is silly. But governments, or government officials, have to play for the stage of history. There are few that concentrate their efforts where they should be focused - with the citizens.

Thank you for posting about this. I am British, and I am not convinced either whether they were in Iranian waters or not. I *think* they were not, but in a way it doesn't matter, because Iran still felt they wanted to capture them, and there will have been a reason why.
I feel frustrated that I do not have enough or reliable information to really know what went on, and yet we are expected to vote for our governments - it's hard to make a sensible choice without access to trustworthy information. Forced confessions are not ok, but I do think that gifts and food are better than being beheaded, which has happened to several western hostages in the middle east. Again, thank you for your views, and I am also a British Citizen who like many around the world are looking at the spirit of the times inside the minds of all people.
For me the issue of positioning is not a matter for debate. I understand both states have mechanisms in place which can control the will of the people, but in Iran as I understand it in the same way you do, the state controls far more of the media in all it's forms. But i'm afraid in this instance many people simply overlook the plain reality of the situation in favour of what they feel they would like to be the truth. The plainly spoken truth of the matter is that despite what many have been made to think inside Iran, Britain and the British people admit their mistakes. It is our way, the spirit of our times, and no other nation on earth eats as much "Humble Pie" as this one. On the last occasion where Iranian military arrested the British men on a boat very close to the river mouth, the United Kingdom government admitted their mistake and apologised. Our men were returned unharmed (after being displayed on TV digging their own graves to the sounds of Iranian gun-fire). In this case though there was nothing to apologise for, as that is why no apology was forth comming. The British forces were inside their own waters, and unfortunately for the majority of Iranians who were made to believe otherwise by your leaders, I am confident that the majority of free thinking rational human beings can recognise this fact. We have never once in the entire history of the Britian sent women over the border on military operations. It has been only in the past couple of 10 years or so that more and more Women like Faye have been able to serve in the Navy. And we likely never will, it's against all of our code of ethics. So at the very least, the most reasonable among us should recognise that the female sailor Faye is only allowed to operate inside the relative safety offered in UN Mandated security zones. But aside from that, I am glad I have found your personal corner of the Internet for it re-affirms to me that there is intelligent life out there someplace. What we see inside Iran trouble many of us. Power and strength to your arm, and may you personaly enjoy much liberty and freedom as the rest of us. Freedom is not a choice, it's not a right, it is LIFE. |
